- We adore you, Oh Christ, ...
FROM NOON ONWARDS, DARKNESS CAME OVER THE WHOLE LAND UNTIL THREE IN THE AFTERNOON. AND ABOUT THREE O’CLOCK JESUS CRIED OUT IN A LOUD VOICE, “ELI, ELI, LEMA SABACHTHANI?, WHICH MEANS, “MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME? SOME OF THE BYSTANDERS WHO HEARD IT SAID “THIS ONE IS CALLING ELIJAH”. IMMEDIATELY ONE OF THEM RAN TO GET A SPONGE; HE SOAKED IT IN WINE AND PUTTING IT ON A REED, GAVE IT TO HIM TO DRINK. BUT JESUS CRIED OUT AGAIN IN A LOUD VOICE, AND GAVE UP HIS SPIRIT. (Matthew 27: 45-48.50).
Jesus has died, just a moment of silence and the cry of his Mother is heard: "I no longer have a Son!" Immediately the roar of the earth that trembles is felt. He who created heaven and earth has died, the Savior has died. The angels will also say in astonishment: "How he loved them!" The darkness invades with fear those who have crucified him.
But the darkness gives way to a new light of hope. All things will return to their original state when he is resurrected. At that hour, only those who love him await him immersed in sorrow and anguish.
Jesus has died! God has fulfilled his promise! Mankind has been redeemed!
Beloved Father, who gave Salvation to all of us through the redemptive sacrifice of the cross, give us firmness of spirit, a growing desire to serve you with our daily lives, a true determination to do your will at all times and, above all, light our hearts in the same burning bonfire of charity that lit the Heart of Jesus, who gave his life for all men. Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord Amen.
