FIRST MYSTERY:
THE AGONY IN THE GARDEN
"My soul is sorrowful even to death. Remain here and keep watch with me." (Matthew 26: 38).
Mary, you were not oblivious to the agony of your Son at that time. As Mother and Mediatrix of all graces, your groans and tears joined those of Jesus. You also prayed to the Father asking him to sustain them and to carry out the work of redemption. The entire weight of sin fell on Jesus, this enormous weight also fell on your immaculate and loving Heart. Oh Mother, help us to recognize that this immense sacrifice was for each one of us. May we also associate ourselves with the sacrifice of Jesus and yours.
SECOND MYSTERY:
JESUS IS SCOURGED
(...) he (Pilate) took water and washed his hands in the sight of the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this man's blood. Look to it yourselves.” (Mathew 27: 24b).
Pilate had Jesus scourged to calm down the crowd that was clamoring for him to be crucified. These wounds and this precious blood were necessary for our sins of the flesh to be purified and forgiven. Mary, your copious tears washed the martyred body of your Son when he was deposited on your knees. Pray, our Mother, so that those tears of yours, united with the blood of our Redeemer, wash us from all our impurities and selfishness.
THIRD MYSTERY:
THE CROWNING WITH THORNS
The soldiers led him away inside the palace, that is, the praetorium, and assembled the whole cohort. They clothed him in purple and, weaving a crown of thorns, placed it on him. They began to salute him with, "Hail, King of the Jews!" (Mark 15: 16- 18).
Despised and mocked, Jesus endured the pain of the thorns to atone for us our sins of arrogance, pride and vanity. Contemplating the King of Heaven and earth thus humiliated by some soldiers should move us to reflect on the poverty of our giving. Our Mother, accompany us every day on our little path of giving, so that we can be encouraged to give everything for love to him who endured so much and loved us so much.
FOURTH MYSTERY:
JESUS ON HIS WAY TO CALVARY
So he released the man who had been imprisoned for rebellion and murder, for whom they asked, and he handed Jesus over to them to deal with as they wished. (Luke 23: 25).
Jesus carried his cross uphill through a barren mountain full of thorns to the place where criminals were executed, because he was treated as such. His agony intensified as he climbed, until he could go no further. Then, someone helped him. Mother, Mary of the Pilgrims, who waited for Jesus beside the path to his destination to the cross, accompany us too so that we can carry our little daily crosses, often uphill.
FIFTH MYSTERY:
CRUCIFIXION AND DEATH OF JESUS
And about three o'clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Mathew 27: 46).
In the solitude and abandonment of the cross, Jesus dies. His Mother also dies in her Heart, remaining plunged into the greatest solitude and anguish. Let us allow ourselves to be questioned by this vision of our Redeemer who died on the cross next to the Blessed Virgin who remained by his side. Oh, our Mother, remain with your children at all times. You who are our Mother, accompany those of us who pilgrim along the path of love that is given and offered for all. Pray, Mary, for the souls of the unrepentant and those who are about to die.
